Day Trip to Wenchi Crater Lake
Overview
Wenchi Crater Lake is a stunning volcanic lake surrounded by lush forests, waterfalls, and hot springs. The lake’s crystal-clear turquoise waters reflect the surrounding green hills, creating a postcard-perfect scene. Itinerary
Start your day early with a drive from Addis Ababa through green mountains and forests. You will pass beautiful places like Menagesha Forest, the old town of Addis Alem, and Ambo (famous for its natural spring water). When you arrive at Wenchi Crater Lake, local guides will explain the trip. You can choose to hike down into the crater or ride a horse (or drive down if you prefer). The path takes you through small villages, farms, and volcanic land. You’ll see special plants and meet friendly people living there.
At the bottom of the crater, enjoy a peaceful boat ride on the lake’s blue-green water to visit Debre Island. Here, you can explore the Cherkos Monastery, a quiet religious place built in the 13th century. Afterward, have a picnic lunch by the lake. Relax, swim in warm natural hot springs, Walk around the crater floor, or just enjoy the calm views.
To leave the crater, you can hike back up, ride a horse, or take a mule. On the way, stop to take photos of the amazing views—green valleys, the volcano crater, and the lake below.
